Sitruss:

I found it hard to pick and choose how any inspiration showed up in my music. Its that struggle that ultimately shut my output down completely. Stuff (inspired by______) would just pop up in my ideas - I'd notice it and when I couldn't get rid of it or get past it - I'd put the instrument down.

Just like the Dali quote.

But I didn't use to be this way.

I used allow myself any idea or belief that helped me create art.

Any belief or idea that prevented me from creating I'd drop. It was that simple. One idea I used to have a lot more tolerance for -it's ok to wear your inspirations on your sleeve a little bit.

I lost touch with that. That's what happens by not showing up to play "seriously" every day.

Squarepusher's manifesto.

Don't know how I feel about that.

Does he talk that way in real life? It's very opaque and pedantic.

If I attempt to look "beyond" the words - I hear a guy responding to criticism by trying to be smarter than his critics - trying to justify an obvious facet of his body of work.

I've read interviews where he sounded much more "normal" - saying he got into music by breaking the tools of music creation.

I reasonably expect such a path will result in wildly diverse musics. He never really had to say much more to me than that.

Some of his stuff resonates with me - some doesn't. Same is true with all artists.

This definitely speaks to how I've viewed creativity too. I think I've always been afraid of crafting a creative legacy that could be described as "he's like Artist A combined with Artist B". Ultimately though, I could think I have the most original music in the world and people would still be able to notice similarities and influences where even I can't, so it probably isn't worth worrying about too much.

Generally I think the key is knowing how to blend your inspirations in a way that they become blurry and difficult to compartmentalize (thusly the undetected plagiarism). On the other hand there are guys like Tom "Squarepusher" Jenkinson, whose manifesto explains that his prime musical aspiration is to "see across as opposed to seeing from", which is a very succinct description of how 'random' his track variety is on many of his albums, so he is effectively doing just the opposite (which seems to work for his purposes).

Howdy Jeff! Thanks for sharing my article.

And too funny about putting the other 90% out on the Internet anyway. I don't do that---or at least try not to, yikes---but now you've got me thinking...

I've got 125 posts...what if I culled the archive down to just the 12 or 13? Hmmm...

Good luck on your a-hunerd ;-)

after a chat with darren michaels -who used to own one of the originals - i'm bailing on the Warwick. The boulder creek bass looks great - but they don't make lefties.

Well - since I haven't actually gotten a Warwick Acoustic yet - I'm inclined to think they don't do acoustics either. The balloon bass is awesome! I'm making one - love the sound!

Interesting! I didn't know Warwick did acoustics. The alien does look pretty nice, but over a year is a pretty maddening wait time. Maybe it's time to consider making yourself a balloon bass. Put one of those through the butt probe. Yeahhhhhh.

sitruss - I have looked at all those basses and finally settled on a Warwick Alien 5 which I have on special order from Bass Central. For a year already.

They have no idea when it will arrived. I was looking to keep the cost down - but I may have to cut bait on the Warwick and pursue something like the Boulder Creek.
